Marketing professionals work in challenging, creative and exciting roles. Marketing roles involve brand building, developing new products and services, building and maintaining distribution channels, selling and managing sales teams, developing relationships with customers, advertising and communicating with customers. Marketing professionals also conduct research, plan, forecast and implement marketing plans. Marketing and sales positions have had high levels of growth in job advertisements (see http://www.olivier.com.au/IJI_Current.html) . Marketing graduates also acquire a range of general skills that enable them to perform in a variety of additional roles where they can add value to the organisation and create a competitive advantage.
The Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing) aims to provide students with a sound background in business combined with an understanding of the role of marketing within and between organisations. The undergraduate program develops understanding of marketing theory and experience in the preparation of marketing reports. Students then progress to study consumer behaviour, marketing tools, international marketing and marketing research.
The Master of Commerce (Marketing) is designed to provide a comprehensive, up-to-date understanding of concepts, techniques and professional applications in marketing. It is aimed at graduates of marketing and non-marketing disciplines who wish to seek careers in marketing or marketing-related fields. It will equip candidates for business roles such as marketing planner, sales manager, brand marketer, product and advertising manager, retail manager, public relations officer, service manager and market researcher.
For those candidates with a recognised marketing degree, advanced level courses offered within this discipline provide greater depth and breadth in strategic thinking and analytical tools in marketing and business. The study of marketing at an advanced level may enable candidates to move more rapidly into senior marketing positions in consumer, business, government, community service and non-profit organisations.
Graduates of the undergraduate and postgraduate marketing pathways may gain partial credit towards the Certified Practicing Marketer (CPM) awarded by the Australian Marketing Institute (AMI). Further, completion of specific courses allows students to apply for the Certificate in Market Research from the Australian Market and Social Research Society. Combined with an undergraduate degree from another discipline such as Engineering, Finance, Science, Humanities and Media Studies an MCom (Marketing) can open a wide range of career opportunities in a range of enterprises from business to government and large to small organisations.
