ACCOUNTING

Accounting studies in the School of Commerce is a very popular choice for students. The practice of accounting comprises financial accounting and management accounting. Financial accounting is focused on external reporting and auditing functions. Management accounting is concerned with providing information for planning and controlling decisions within organisations.

Career prospects lie in such specialised fields as taxation, accounting systems, corporate accounting, financial accounting, auditing, management accounting, business advisory services and finance.  Recent developments in reporting practices have meant that there are increasing opportunities for accountants in all public sector entities.

A Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) degree not only offers immediate career opportunities in the field of accounting, but also provides the foundations from which other options may be pursued.  Students may choose to include the study of other areas within their degree in preparation for a more specialised career path. This could include the study of information systems to develop an understanding of how to use technology to provide business solutions. Other high demand areas such as finance and capital markets, international business and strategic planning could be included to complement accounting studies.

Accounting skills are invaluable in all areas of business and provide graduates with opportunities to work in a diverse range of small or large organisations either locally or overseas.

For those interested in postgraduate study the Master of Commerce (Accounting) has been designed to offer knowledge and skills in accounting and other related fields.  The program accommodates students with accounting or non-accounting undergraduate degrees.  Those with non-accounting backgrounds can develop the necessary skills to move into accounting roles whilst those with accounting qualifications can undertake advanced level courses in knowledge and public sector management, financial reporting and research in order to develop their professional expertise and career opportunities.  Both the undergraduate and postgraduate accounting programs are accredited by CPA Australia and the Institute of Chartered Accountants.  In addition, those students wishing to undertake further studies in both finance and accounting have the option of enrolling in the Master of Accounting and Finance.
