The University and Student Union provide a number of services for students, ranging from academic to personal and recreational services and amenities. This page lists the more popular services.

LEARNING

Language and Learning Services (LLS)
Level 2, Schulz Building
The Language and Learning Services is part of the Centre for Learning and Professional Development (CLPD). It offers students a range of academic workshops, as well as print and online resources to develop language and learning skills at undergraduate and postgraduate coursework levels.

A drop-in Helpdesk is available each day at 2 – 4pm to address students' academic concerns. No appointment is needed for these sessions.

The LLS provides sessions for local and international students with language backgrounds other than English. These include a series of workshops on Academic Writing, Conversation Tutorials and a Volunteer Program for individual conversation development.

The LLS also offers an introductory session for mature-age students to assist their transition into university.

Workshops may also be arranged in response to specific requests from students and staff within departments, schools and faculties.

Mathematics Learning Service
Level 1, Schulz Building (G3 on campus map)

The Maths Learning Service provides assistance to all University of Adelaide students with the maths and stats in their studies.
In particular, they run a free Maths Drop-In Centre (see below) for students to consult tutors about maths or stats problems over a cup of tea or coffee. Students may stay as long as they like and visit as often as needed. No appointments required.
Services offered include:

  • The Maths Drop-In Centre
  • Bridging modules for students with an O-Level maths background who are studying Mathematics 1A, 1B, 1MA or 1MB.
  • Bridging courses in pre-tertiary maths and stats including online modules
  • Workshops for small groups can be arranged
  • Books, videos and web-based materials

Communication Skills Guide
A softcopy is available here
A hardcopy is available from the Image and Copy Centre (ICC), Level 1, Hughes Building.

This guide provides students with valuable practical information about the communication skills that are required of them in their studies.  For example, information is provided about how to:

  • write essays and management reports
  • make engaging oral presentations
  • correctly cite and reference sources
  • independent learning
  • academic expectations

Every student is expected to use the “Comskills Guide” as a reference for all courses.

 

Lecturer/Tutor Consultation times

Your lecturers and tutors are available to answer questions or clarify any course material you maybe having trouble with. It's highly recommended you contact the lecturer and/or tutor as you encounter problems throughout the semester rather than leaving your questions until swot vac, or the day before the exam!

Consultation times and locations can be found in the course outline.

 

Library Skills Tutorial

The library skills tutorial is an on-line resource designed to provide students with the skills needed to access books, journals, databases and Internet sources for the purpose of researching course assignments.  It will take approximately three to four hours and is ideally completed over a number of sessions.

Disability Liaison Officer

Level 4, Hughes Plaza

The Disability Liaison Officer can assist with information and advice about accessing services (i.e. note taking, special equipment and alternative exam arrangements).

The administration staff may be able to answer student questions. If further assistance is needed they will book an appointment with the Disability Liaison Officer.

Appointments are available Monday to Thursday between 9.30am and 4.00pm.

Counselling and Advocacy Services

Ground Floor of the Horace Lamb Building

The Counselling Service deals with personal issues such as stress, relationship difficulties, panic and anxiety, depression, family issues, abuse and sexuality. Academic issues dealt with include: Motivation, organisation, concentration and special consideration for assessment.

The following services are offered:

  • Individual counselling (appointment required)
  • Telephone counselling
  • Assistance in crisis
  • Drop In Service (Daily from 1.00pm – 2.30pm)

Education and Welfare Officers (EWOs)

Ground Floor, Lady Symons Building, N-W corner of Cloisters.

The EWOs advise students about welfare resources on campus, financial matters (i.e. emergency loans, and advise on Youth Allowance, Austudy or Abstudy), housing, personal issues and academic matters (including support with grievances)

Health Services

Ground floor of the Horace Lamb Building

University Health is a research and teaching practice in association with the Department of General Practice providing comprehensive and confidential health care to all students and staff in a friendly and comfortable environment.

Parklands is open Monday to Friday 8.45am to 5pm all year round except for public holidays.

Appointments can be made by phoning 8303 5050 or by coming in and talking to the staff. Both female and male doctors are available and consultations are usually bulk-billed.

Student Centre

The Student Centre has been set up as a central point of contact and deals with a wide range of enquiries regarding programs, admissions, procedures, fees and changes, enrolments, examinations and graduations for all prospective and current students

International Student Centre (ISC)

Old Classics Wing

The International Student Centre is responsible for the orientation and ongoing support of international students. It works closely with student groups, faculties and University administration to ensure the experience of all international students is a positive and successful one. Services offered by the ISC include:

Morning Tea is held each Friday at 10am, during teaching weeks.

Scholarships website

The Scholarship website provides information on a range of scholarships, funded by the University and some by external organisations, for both commencing and continuing undergraduate students from wide-ranging backgrounds.

You can do the following at the Commerce Office:

  • Hand up Commerce subject assignments
  • Ask questions about enrolment, graduations & your academic transcript
  • Apply for supplementary exams
  • Apply for cross institutional study, credit transfer
  • Receive information about study plan and course pathways
  • Make an appointment for the Student Advisor.

Student Advisor will provide:

  • Answers and referrals
  • Complex program advise
  • Recommendations to balance workload and assist with strategies for success

Careers Service

Level 6, Hughes Building

The Careers Service aims to assist students to obtain an understanding of their personal qualities and skills as well as knowledge of the labour market, industry sectors and sub sectors and employers.

The service can also help students to develop job strategies including career decision making, resume preparation and interview techniques.

The Careers Service is responsible for the following:

  • Employment Skills Workshops and Seminars (job search, resume preparation, cover letters, application forms, interview skills, career planning)
  • Employer Information Sessions
  • Career Resource Centre
  • Graduate Job Vacancies
  • Resume Checking Service
  • Internet facilities to access career and employment information
  • Web based Company/Employer Directories.
  • The Careers Fair
In addition the service provides information on work experience, further study, professional associations and employment links.

 

Wilto Yerlo (Aboriginal Programs)

Ground floor Hartley Building

Wilto Yerlo is the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Academic and Student Support Program.

Wilto Yerlo is responsible for administering the Special Entry Access Scheme for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to all programs offered at the University of Adelaide as well as the delivery of foundation programs.

Commerce Students' Association

Basement – Security House, 233 North Tce

The Commerce Students' Association (CSA) is a student run and established association, which exists to provide all the non-academic splendours of studying Commerce, Finance and Economics at the University of Adelaide. It runs and manages many events, both social and professional, as well as providing various valuable services, including an online book sale and advisory on future careers in Commerce.

 

AIESEC

Basement, 233 North Tce

AIESEC, the world's largest student organization, is the international platform for young people to discover and develop their potential so as to have a positive impact on society.

In addition to providing over 5,000 leadership positions and delivering over 350 conferences, AIESEC also runs an exchange program that enables over 3,500 students and recent graduates the opportunity to live and work in another country.

Overseas Students' Association

Level 3, George Murray Building

The Overseas Students' Association (OSA) is the official student organisation that represents all international students at the University of Adelaide. International students at the University are automatically members. The OSA is an affiliate of the Adelaide University Union, which provides funding for OSA endeavours.

The OSA was formed in 1985 and continues to be the main focal point for the coordination of social activities for international students, as well as representation and support for the needs and rights of international students at the University of Adelaide. Located on the 1st Floor of the George Murray Building in the Cloisters are the OSA Offices and the OSA Lounge for international students. 

 

Sports Association

Life at university has more to offer than just study. There is a complete range of recreational activities to be had through the Adelaide University Sports Association.

Accommodation Service

Hughes Plaza

The University of Adelaide considers accommodation to be an important component in setting a solid foundation for academic success.

Finding comfortable accommodation, in a convenient location with the right people is important. However finding the right place can take time. The University of Adelaide Accommodation Service recommends that you begin your search well before the first day of University.

 

Security Office

Hughes Plaza

The University of Adelaide Security Service provides a variety of assistance to staff and students including:

  • Free shuttle bus service
  • Escorts to your car
  • Emergency Call points
  • First Aid Assistance
  • Free Self defence courses
  • Lost, found and stolen property

 

Computer labs

Students have access to a number of computer labs

  • the basement of Security House. The labs are used for tutorial
  • first floor of the Napier Building
  • level 3 of the Barr Smith Library
  • and in the 24 hour access, Union Resource Centre, on level 3 of the Union Building.

Computers are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and any computer left unattended for more than 10 minutes will be logged out by the lab supervisor.
