Cross-Institutional and Prior Study

Cross-Institutional Application Form
Recognition of Prior Study Form

Cross-Institutional

Cross-Institutional study is when a student at Adelaide University takes one or more courses through another institution. The School of Commerce assesses each application on a case by case basis, and there is no obligation to allow cross-institutional study.

Reasons that a student might want to study cross-institutionally include:

  • Adelaide Uni does not offer the course
  • Course is not offered here in the desired semester, and it is your final semester
  • Course is not offered here in the desired semester, and you need course to gain a pre-requisite

The School of Commerce believes that face-to-face study is beneficial, and will only approve study by distance-education under exceptional circumstances.

For core courses, it may be difficult to find a course at another institution that is equivalent––there must be 80% or more topic-match for approval to be given. For both core and electives, there must be academic rigour and the assessment method needs to be acceptable.

To apply to study cross-institutionally, follow these steps:

1.   SUPPLY A COPY OF THE FULL COURSE OUTLINE – Find details of course to study.  Obtain the full Course Outline from the institution.  Usually, a print from the web is not sufficient. The Course Outline must show:

  • weekly topics
  • syllabus
  • assessment details and breakdown
  • text-books

The School of Commerce may know of previously assessed core-matches at local universities, and for these we will not require the Course Outline. Ask at the front counter.

2.   PRE-REQUISITES – Make sure you have met the pre-requisites of proposed course.

3.   ENROLMENT DATES – You need to apply at least 3 weeks before the last date to enrol.  If late, you must contact the institution to see if they will accept late enrolments.

4.   CROSS-INSTITUTIONAL APPLICATION FORM  – Fill out this form, attach course outline, and submit to the Commerce office.

5.   APPROVAL EMAIL & UNIT DIFFERENCE –  If approved, we will send you an official approval email.   If denied, we will let you know.  You may only get 3 units for a second or third-year course.  This is due to a difference in some program structures, however we will allow students who have done 1 cross-institutional course to graduate 1 unit short (ie. with 71 units.)  For multiple cross-institutional study where units are short, extra units need to be made up by further study.

6.   ENROL – Get the application form from the other institution to apply to study with them.  Contact the other institution for all details.  Many application forms ask for our signature – you don’t need this, just write ‘see attached’ and attach the official approval email from us.  Local Students should attach a copy of the Commonwealth Assessment Notice showing their fees are covered by HECS or HELP.  This can be printed from Access Adelaide under ‘Finances’.

7.   STUDY THE COURSE!

8.   TRANSCRIPT OF RESULTS –  After successful completion of the course (not a conceded pass) please bring in your official transcript of results, or a copy that has been certified by the other institution (stamped and signed as a true copy).  Non-official, non-certified transcripts cannot be accepted. Fill in the Transfer Credit form.

9.   REFLECTION OF CREDIT The actual grade you received for your cross-institutional course will not be reflected your Adelaide Uni transcript.  You may need to show employers the transcript from the other institution.

Prior Study

The School of Commerce will only assess prior study for students enrolled in our school.  You need to supply an official transcript of results, or a copy that has been certified by the other institution (stamped and signed as a true copy).  Non-official, non-certified transcripts will not be accepted.  Fill in the Prior Study form

Core Courses – For core course equivalence, we need the full Course Outline.  Usually, a print from the web is not sufficient, unless it shows:

  • weekly topics
  • syllabus
  • assessment details and breakdown
  • text-books

You will probably need to obtain the outline from the other institution.  The School of Commerce may know of previously assessed core-matches at local universities, and for these we will not require the Course Outline.  Ask at the front counter.

Electives – For elective prior study, you do not need a course outline initially – we will contact you if you do.

For any queries, please email Bernadette Smith.
